Bully Me in Person Please

For as much as I love the Internet, I am beginning to hate it. I am beginning to loathe every news story I read, every tweet about the President, and every hate-filled, racist response to every statement made or question posed on the Internet that involves a person of color. Almost any color. I truly hate that kids are killing themselves because of it and that a lot of people seem to think they are intelligent because they post something, and someone, somewhere agrees with them.

Do you remember the days when the Internet was young? (Back when it was internet instead of the proper noun Internet). We were all so happy to just be able to talk to each other freely that no one said anything mean. If they did, it was just sarcastic humor and we all knew that it wasn’t serious. In other words; no one said anything on the Internet that they wouldn’t say to your face.

Fast forward to today. A day when I can’t go a day without reading some horrible post from someone who’s bitter about something. I don’t know what that would be. A black CITIZEN leading the country? A firm believer in God who’s trying to follow his Commandments? A true patriot who understands that freedom, just like everything else, isn’t free? Guys both black and white who sag their pants? NASCAR drivers who win races but aren’t the children of other famous NASCAR parents and grand-parents? Single moms trying to feed their children. The elderly who are in the same position? LGBT folks who just want to be themselves? I guess I should stop somewhere.

I call these people Internet bullies. These are people who are willing to sit down in front of a computer monitor and type out the most tasteless, vile, insulting, and degrading statements for the entire world to read. And they do it without hesitation anywhere and everywhere they can. What’s worse is that they do it from behind some silly screen name that usually has the number 69 in it or anon, as if they really belong to the group, and some stupid icon that’s either supposed to be intimidating or some little anime girl that really makes you wonder what they’re thinking about when they’re not trashing someone else.
